Description
On June 17th General Walt Natynczyk took time out of his busy schedule to meet with Scott Taylor at his office to talk about the Canadian Forces. Much has changed in the two years since he took the position of chief of the defence staff, and the CF has been in the spotlight on a wide gamut of topics, including its humanitarian mission to Haiti, the push for an extension to the Afghan mission, the impact of the Semrau case, the navy's reduction in operations, and the effect of the widely publicized Menard and Williams stories. Below is the first of a two-part interview with Uncle Walt, who is not afraid of calling it as he sees it. Scott Taylor: General, we are approaching the two-year mark of your appointment as chief of defence staff, so this is sort of a midterm review. You have had some serious challenges to deal with, and some are still looming on the horizon. Obviously one of the most talked about is whether or not there will be a troop pullout as scheduled from Afghanistan in 2011. Without another mission to deploy on, what can we expect for the Canadian Forces?
